What?

“Choose a Community” came to be as a result of student discussion throughout our ELA units and revolving around current events. My 6th grade students had a lot to say and so many questions - they would often turn to me for answers and I saw this as an opportunity to learn together as well as continue elevating student voice. This is a project that I originally used as end of year option after testing and has been adapted each year since then based on student discussion and feedback. Students have the opportunity to choose and learn about how a community has been marginalized in the US throughout history, currently still is, what is being done and reflect on what they can do to take action.

Why?

I believe that student discussion and questioning about what is happening around them is key to helping all students be advocates for themselves, their families and their communities. By giving students the chance to learn more about current events and the history that has lead up to them as well as how people are already acting as strong advocates, we help make them active participants in their learning and develop their critical thinking skills.

How?

This slides show the roll out of the project including details, resources, a sample timeline and rubric. In the folder you will find a notetaker, student slides template and checklist. Since it is done via slides, this project can be done in any school and group setting.
