Interview a Family Member & Protest Visual

What?

“Interview & Protest Visual” came from my students’ engagement with our ELA unit about the history of immgration in the US which included a novel student using the book “Esperanza Rising” by Pam Muñoz Ryan. Similarly to “Choose a Community” this project came to be from student discussion and questions. Additionally, many of my students wanted to have the opportunity to share their own immigrant families’ experience with the class and learn about what protests looked like today. This project can be divided into two separate assignments, used as an end of year option or something that students build on throughout a quarter. 

Why?

Often times, our students have many questions and want to learn more after a novel study or informational text and this project gives them the change to lead this learning. This project also gives students the opportunity to elevate their families and communities’ voice along with their own. 

How?

This slides show the roll out of the project including details, resources, a sample timeline and rubric. In the folder you will find a notetakers aligned to the days on the sample timeline and a protest visual template (only necessary if not using paper). Since it is done via google docs and slides, this project can be done in any school and group setting.
