Why: This connects students with each other as well as with you as their teacher. It’s been said numerous times, connections before content. Using a few minutes before starting your class lesson to create some connection conversation is helpful.

For in person learning, you can have students turn and talk to their partners. You can still use a slide deck and project it on the screen for students.

What: Start each class with a connection or check in exercise

How: You can incorporate this as a slide on your slide deck for your lesson for the day. If teaching remotely, you can have students unmute and share out loud. You can also offer the option of typing in the chat to everyone/you personally if they’re not comfortable sharing with everyone. Another option would be to have students go into breakout rooms. This is something you can use with any content area. For example, as a Spanish/World Language teacher, you can change the questions to your content language. Or as a math teacher, you can change the questions to something to do with your lesson for the day and incorporate the question into word problems.
