Choose a Leader
Curated by: Julianna Parra
What?
“Choose a Leader” came to be from student interest in learning more about the lives and lasting impact of different leaders we had learned about throughout our ELA units. Students are asked to pick a leader we have learned about as a class and extend their learning, then share it with the class or a partner. This project has been used as an EOY and end of unit option in order to promote student choice in research and includes the supports of preselected websites to ensure students are using reliable sources for their project.
Why?
My students always had questions about the different leaders we learned about and by giving this PBL opportunity they were able to take lead in their learning and find answers to share with our class. Additionally, using the name of “Choose a Leader” vs. biography project emphasized the importance of why we learn about these different people and how their example can help us be leaders as well.
How?
This slides show the roll out of the project including details, resources, a sample timeline and rubric. In the folder you will find a brainstorming table, student slides template and checklist. Since it is done via slides, this project can be done in any school and group setting.
