Journal Entry & Visual

Curated by: Julianna Parra

What?

This Journal Entry and Visual project is an end of unit or novel study option for the book “Blood on the River” and can be adapted for any book written in journal, diary or letter format. Students are asked to write additional entries as if they were continuing the book using the novel they have read plus additional historical context from resources we also looked at during class throughout the unit. Additionally, students are asked to create a visual component to go along with their entries.

Why?

I created this as a PBL option for the end of our unit because of all the questions and what if statements my students had about how the novel ended. This project provided them with an opportunity to create their own ending or continuation of the story while showing an understanding of the existing plot, characters and historical context.

How?

This slides show the roll out of the project including details, resources, a sample timeline and rubric. In the folder you will find a brainstorming table, first draft handout, final draft handout and checklist. This can be done on paper or via docs which makes it easy to do across any learning setting.
